What Does It Mean to Be a Non-Diet Dietitian?
Hi, I’m Jess – an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle.
If you’ve ever felt stuck in the cycle of dieting, you’re not alone. So many of my clients come to me feeling confused, frustrated, or even ashamed about their eating – not because they’re doing anything wrong, but because the world has taught them that food is something to control, and that weight is something to shred.
That’s why I take a non-diet approach to nutrition. It’s a way of working that’s grounded in compassion, evidence, and the belief that you can take care of your health without dieting.
Here’s what that means, and why it might feel like the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for.
1. Non-Diet Doesn’t Mean Anti-Health. It Means Weight Isn’t the Focus
The non-diet approach is all about supporting your health without using weight loss as the measure of success.
That doesn’t mean I’m against health goals - far from it. It just means I don’t believe restrictive diets, calorie counting, or body shaming are helpful ways to get there. Instead, I focus on helping you build habits that support your energy, digestion, mood, and overall wellbeing, in a way that’s flexible, enjoyable, and sustainable.
It’s not about willpower. It’s about creating a healthier relationship with food and your body.
2. Diets Don’t Work Long-Term – and That’s Not Your Fault
Most people have tried at least one diet in their life. Some have tried five, ten, even twenty. But here’s what we know from research and lived experience: diets don’t work long-term for most people.
They often lead to short-term weight loss, followed by weight regain, feelings of failure, and a lot of guilt. This pattern, sometimes called weight cycling, can actually be harder on your physical and mental health than staying at a stable weight.
I want to help break that cycle. That means letting go of rigid food rules, listening to your body’s cues, and working toward health in a way that’s grounded in self-care, not self-criticism.
3. What Working With a Non-Diet Dietitian Looks Like
When we work together, I’ll never ask you to count calories, cut out foods you enjoy, or step on a scale if you don’t wish to. Instead, we’ll focus on the things that actually matter:
✔️ How you’re feeling — physically, mentally, and emotionally
✔️ What’s getting in the way of eating in a way that feels good
✔️ How to build habits that are nourishing and satisfying
✔️ How to eat without guilt, confusion, or shame
Whether you’re working on gut health, cholesterol, blood sugar, or just trying to stop stressing about food all the time, you deserve support that respects and honours your body — not fights against it.

If any of this resonated with you, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
I work with clients across Fremantle and beyond (telehealth available) to explore a more compassionate, evidence-based approach to nutrition and health. No diets. No shame. Just support that works for you.
