“Food Noise” What Is It and Why Won’t It Stop?

Hi, I’m Jess, an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle.

Have you ever found yourself constantly thinking about food?

Not just when you're hungry, but all day long.
What’s for breakfast? What time’s lunch? Should I eat that? Should I not eat that?
You’re trying to focus on work or be present with your family, but thoughts of food just keep popping up. It’s loud, distracting, and exhausting.

This constant chatter in your mind is what many people are now calling “food noise.”

1. What Is Food Noise, and Why Does It Happen?

Food noise is that ongoing mental chatter about food, eating, and body image that can follow you throughout the day.

For some people, it’s subtle but constant.
For others, it’s loud, intrusive, and exhausting.

Food noise often comes from:

  • Dieting and food restriction (past or present)

  • Skipping meals or under-eating

  • Emotional eating patterns

  • Disconnection from hunger and fullness cues

And while it might feel like a lack of control or willpower — it’s not.
It’s actually your brain responding to biological, emotional, and environmental cues. The good news? You can quieten it.

2. How Food Noise Affects Your Day-to-Day Life

Food noise can be incredibly draining, even if you don’t realise how much mental space it takes up. Some signs of food noise include:

✔️ Constantly thinking about what you “should” or “shouldn’t” eat
✔️ Feeling out of control around certain foods
✔️ Eating when you’re not hungry, or avoiding food when you are
✔️ Difficulty focusing at work or being present with family
✔️ Feeling guilty after meals, even when you haven’t done anything wrong

✔️Constant cravings

This can leave you feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or stuck in a cycle of trying to "eat better", only to end up back where you started.

3. How I Help Clients Quiet Food Noise, With or Without Medication

As a dietitian, I work with people every day who are tired of obsessing over food and just want to feel calm, in control, and nourished

Whether you’re navigating food noise for the first time, or it’s been part of your life for years, I can help you:

✔️ Reconnect with hunger and fullness cues
✔️ Build regular, satisfying meals that reduce cravings and mental noise
✔️ Challenge unhelpful food rules without fear
✔️ Explore emotional eating patterns in a supportive, non-judgemental space

Some clients are also using GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro. These can reduce food noise in the short term, but long-term food freedom comes from rebuilding your relationship with food, regardless of medication.

Wherever you’re at, I’ll meet you there.
