How Much Does a Dietitian Cost, and What Are You Really Paying For?
Hi, I’m Jess, an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle.
If you’ve been thinking about seeing a dietitian but find yourself wondering “how much does it actually cost?” — you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common (and completely valid!) questions I hear.
Let’s break it down, not just in dollars, but in terms of what you actually get from working with a qualified dietitian.
1. What Does It Cost to See a Dietitian, And What’s Included?
At my clinic, the fee for an initial consultation and follow-up session is the same whether you’re attending privately or through a GP care plan. That way, it’s simple and consistent.
But more importantly — here’s what you’re really getting:
✔️ Tailored evidence based advice, not generic plans
✔️ Time spent before and after your appointment to review your history and plan your care
✔️ A chance to be heard and understood, without judgment
✔️ Practical tools you can actually apply — whether you're managing a condition, building new habits, or just trying to feel better
As an Accredited Practising Dietitian with 14 years of experience, I bring not only empathy and experience, but also deep clinical training. Dietitians in Australia complete five years of university study, including both medical nutrition theory and supervised practical placements in hospitals and clinics.
This means you’re not just getting food advice — you’re getting qualified, evidence-based support grounded in science and delivered with care.
This isn’t a rushed 10-minute chat. It’s a one-on-one, personalised session focused entirely on you — your body, your health, and your goals.
2. Medicare Rebates, Private Health & Other Support
Depending on your situation, you may be able to access a Medicare rebate for your sessions. Here’s how it works:
If you have a chronic condition (like PCOS, Diabetes, or high cholesterol), your GP may refer you under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan
This gives you access to up to 5 rebated sessions per year
As of July 2025, the Medicare rebate is $61.80 per session
I process your rebate on the spot, so you only need to bring your Medicare card and a cheque/savings card
If you have private health insurance with extras cover, you may also be eligible for a rebate, no referral needed. You can get in touch with your health fund to check.
3. Why Seeing a Dietitian Is an Investment, Not a Quick Fix
I get it, we’re used to free food advice online. But when it comes to your health, your hormones, your energy, and your relationship with food… there’s no comparison to working with someone qualified, experienced, and focused on you.
When you see a dietitian, you’re not just paying for an appointment.
You’re investing in:
Clarity (no more guessing what to eat)
Confidence (knowing what works for your body)
Long-term change (not another 4-week plan)
And honestly, getting support that saves you time, energy, and stress around food? That’s worth a lot.
