Dietitian vs Clinical Nutritionist: Which Is Right for You?

If you've been searching for a clinical nutritionist in Perth, you've probably come across a range of titles—nutritionist, clinical nutritionist, dietitian, holistic nutrition coach... and wondered what the difference actually is.

You're not alone. It can be confusing.

I'm Jess, an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle, supporting people across Perth and online with practical, personalised, evidence-based nutrition care. Whether you're looking for a clinical nutritionist or a dietitian, my goal is the same: to help you improve your health with realistic nutrition advice that fits your lifestyle.

1.What's the Difference Between a Clinical Nutritionist and a Dietitian?

In Australia, the title "nutritionist" isn't legally regulated, which means qualifications and training can vary between practitioners.

You may also come across the term "clinical nutritionist." Many clinical nutritionists have completed extensive nutrition training, but because the title isn't regulated, there isn't a single recognised standard for education or scope of practice.

An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) has completed accredited university training, meets national professional standards, and undertakes ongoing professional development to maintain accreditation.

Dietitians are recognised by GPs, specialists and hospitals as qualified providers of medical nutrition therapy and are eligible for Medicare referrals (where applicable) and many private health rebates.

Working with an APD means you'll benefit from:

✔️ Nutrition advice tailored to your medical history and pathology results, where relevant
✔️ Experience supporting people with complex health conditions and prescribed medications
✔️ Evidence-based recommendations backed by current research
✔️ Practical strategies that fit your lifestyle, without fad diets or unnecessary restriction

2. How I Use Clinical Nutrition to Support Your Health

Whether you've been searching for a clinical nutritionist or a dietitian, my approach is the same: understanding what's happening in your body and giving you practical nutrition strategies that make a real difference.

I regularly support people with:

  • Digestive conditions, including IBS, bloating, reflux and constipation

  • PCOS, perimenopause and other hormonal concerns

  • High cholesterol, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

  • Food intolerances and coeliac disease

  • Weight management and sustainable eating habits

  • Fatigue, low energy and brain fog

Rather than handing you a list of foods to avoid, we'll work together to develop a personalised plan that's realistic, flexible and designed to fit your everyday life.

3. Clinical, But Not Cold

Sometimes the word clinical can sound a bit cold or medical, but that’s not my style.

I take a warm, supportive, and non-diet approach. That means:
✔️ You'll never be judged for where you're starting from
✔️ You won’t be handed a strict meal plan
✔️ You will get personalised guidance that fits your life, routine, and goals

If you've been searching for a clinical nutritionist in Perth, I hope this article has helped explain the difference.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Whether you're managing a medical condition or simply want to feel healthier and more confident with food, I'd love to help.
