Are Dietitians Covered by Medicare? Here’s What You Need to Know

Hi, I’m Jess - an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle.

If you’re thinking about seeing a dietitian but unsure whether Medicare will help cover the cost, you’re not alone.

The good news? Yes, dietitians can be covered under Medicare, with the right referral from your GP. Here’s how it works, and what to expect.

1. You May Be Eligible for Medicare Rebates Through a GP Care Plan

Dietitians are included under Medicare’s GP Chronic Condition Management Plan or formally known as Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan or sometimes referred to an EPC or GP Management Plan

If you have a chronic health condition; like diabetes, PCOS, Coeliac Disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or weight-related concerns, your GP may refer you to see a dietitian under this plan.

You don’t have to be “seriously unwell” to qualify. Many common, ongoing conditions are eligible, and your GP will guide you through the process.

2. You Can Access Up to 5 Rebated Sessions Per Year

Medicare allows for up to 5 sessions per calendar year, shared across all allied health professionals (like dietitians, physiotherapists, podiatrists, exercise physiologists).

As of 1 July 2025, the Medicare rebate for dietetic consults is $61.80 per session

At my clinic, the consult fee is the same whether you attend privately or under a GP care plan. Payment is required at the time of your appointment, and I can process the Medicare rebate on the spot. Just bring your Medicare card and a cheque or savings card to enable the rebate transfer.

3. How to Get a Referral, and What to Bring

If you think you may be eligible, here’s how to get started:

  1. Book an appointment with your GP and ask about a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP)

  1. If you’re eligible, your GP will complete the paperwork and provide a referral to me as your chosen dietitian.

  1. Bring the referral to your first session, or ask your GP to send it directly to my clinic. They can email it to jessica@essencofeating.com.au

Once the referral is in place, you can start claiming your rebates right away. I’m also happy to work with your GP or other care team members to help you get the best support possible.
