How a Dietitian Can Help You Manage Diabetes — Without Cutting Out Everything You Love
Hi, I’m Jess - an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Fremantle.
If you’ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes (or have been living with it for years), you’ve probably been told a dozen things about what you “should” or “shouldn’t” eat. It can feel overwhelming, and honestly, a little scary.
But here’s the truth: you don’t need a perfect diet to manage your blood sugar.
You just need the right suppor, and that’s where I come in.
1. You Don’t Have to Cut Out All the Foods You Love
One of the biggest myths I hear is that managing diabetes means giving up all your favourite foods; pasta, bread, even fruit. But that’s simply not true.
You absolutely can enjoy these foods, it’s just about learning how they affect your body and how to pair and portion them in a way that supports your blood sugar.
When we work together, I help you:
✔️ Understand how different foods impact your glucose levels
✔️ Build meals that are balanced and satisfying
✔️ Find flexible options for work, home, and eating out
✔️ Navigate cultural foods and comfort meals without guilt
I’m not here to hand you a list of foods to avoid. I’m here to help you feel confident and in control.
2. Carbs Aren’t the Enemy — Let’s Understand Them Instead
There’s so much confusion (and fear) around carbohydrates, but you don’t have to avoid them altogether. In fact, your body needs carbs for energy. The key is understanding which types, how much, and when.
Together, we’ll look at:
How to balance carbs with protein, fibre, and healthy fats
Low GI choices that keep you fuller and more stable
What to eat at different times of day — especially if you're on medication or insulin
How to read food labels without overthinking it
I make it practical, realistic, and completely tailored to your lifestyle; whether you're cooking for one, with your partner, or feeding a whole family.
3. Managing Diabetes Is About More Than Just Food
Nutrition is a huge part of diabetes management, but it’s not the only part.
We’ll also talk about things like:
✔️ Sleep, stress and their impact on blood sugar
✔️ Meal timing and consistency
✔️ Movement (even gentle movement) and blood sugar response
✔️ Building small habits that support your energy and wellbeing
My goal is to take the pressure off and help you make sustainable changes, one step at a time. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or just looking for a reset, you don’t have to figure this out on your own.
Let’s Make Diabetes Management Feel Simpler
You don’t need to do this perfectly. You just need the right tools, the right support, and a bit of guidance that actually fits your real life. That’s what I’m here for.
